SCADA Cybersecurity Basics for Industrial Networks

As SCADA systems get connected to broader networks for remote visibility, the attack surface grows. A practical starting point for reducing it.

SCADA systems were historically isolated from corporate IT networks, which provided a degree of protection by default. As remote monitoring, cloud dashboards, and IIoT connectivity have become standard, that isolation has largely disappeared — and with it, the implicit security it provided.

The most common vulnerabilities in practice

  • Default or shared credentials on HMI and SCADA workstations, never changed after commissioning
  • Flat network architecture — no segmentation between IT and OT networks
  • Remote access set up for convenience during commissioning and never properly secured or removed afterward
  • Unpatched legacy systems that can't be updated without a scheduled shutdown

A practical starting point, not a full framework

A complete industrial cybersecurity program (aligned to standards like IEC 62443) is a significant undertaking. But a small set of foundational steps meaningfully reduces risk without a major project: network segmentation between IT and OT, unique credentials per user, and a documented, time-limited process for any remote access.

Why this belongs in the automation conversation, not just IT's

OT cybersecurity decisions have direct safety and availability implications that differ from typical IT risk — a compromised SCADA system can affect physical processes, not just data. That's why network segmentation and access control should be part of the automation project's design discussion, not an afterthought handled entirely by a separate IT team unfamiliar with the control system.
