Choosing an Automation Systems Integrator: Why Location and Local Support Matter

Technical capability gets most of the attention in vendor selection — but proximity and response time often decide how a project actually goes.

When evaluating automation integrators, most comparisons focus on technical capability and reference projects. One factor that gets far less attention — but often matters just as much once a project is running — is physical proximity and local support capacity.

Why proximity matters more than it seems

During commissioning, and especially during the first months of operation, small issues come up that are far easier to resolve with an engineer on site within hours rather than days. A partner based in or near your facility's region can meaningfully reduce unplanned downtime during exactly the period when a new system is most fragile.

What to check before assuming remote support is enough

  • What is the guaranteed on-site response time, and does it change outside standard business hours?
  • Are spare parts stocked locally, or does a critical component mean a multi-week import lead time?
  • Has the integrator delivered projects of similar scale in your region before?

Balancing capability and proximity

This isn't an argument for always choosing the nearest vendor over the most capable one — a highly capable integrator with a strong remote support process can still be the right choice. But proximity should be an explicit factor in the decision, not an afterthought discovered the first time something goes wrong at 2am on a production line.
